The exhibition Right Is Wrong featured significant works by important artists and a contemporary Chinese art history. It covered more than 80 works from one of the world's finest collections of Chinese Contemporary Art: M + Sigg Collection from M +, the vast museum of visual culture that is built in Hong Kong and scheduled to open late 2017.
In this richly illustrated exhibition catalogue, curator Pi Li presents an art historical overview of the development of Chinese contemporary art. Starting in the 70's and artist groups as No Name and Stars, through the events in Tiananmen Square in 1989, we follow the evolution into today's evolving art scene. The publication describes the Chinese art scene in relation to political events taking place in China. It also presents a timeline where historical and political events in China can be followed via important events in arts, allowing a study of the relationship between art and society in the specific recent historical context of China.
The catalogue also encompass a contribution by Uli Sigg, whose private collection was the prerequisite for this exhibition, with a personal reflection on his own motivations and goals as a collector. The catalogue, which is available in both Swedish and English editions, commence with a joint foreword by curators Catherine Pierre, director of Bildmuseet and Lars Nittve, director of M +.
Right Is Wrong was the result of a collaboration between Bildmuseet, Umeå University and M + in West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong. The exhibition at Bildmuseet took place during the European Capital of Culture in Umeå 2014. The exhibition was curated by Pi Li, Chief Curator M +; Lars Nittve, Director M + and Katarina Pierre, Director Bildmuseet in collaboration with Uli Sigg.
