On 10 December 1948 in Paris The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as General Assembly resolution 217 A. It sets out fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages. These humans rights are often protected by national law. In many countries even the environment is protected by law for the benefit of future generations. Thus the environment has been recognized to have a value of it’s own. How about animals? Do they have rights, protected by law? Well most animal protective laws are about protecting them from cruel methods of production, not to give them rights or a value of there own.So what if someone set out to proclaim the same fundamental rights also for all animals? Since planet Earth is theirs as much as it is ours. Much like us humans, animals have intelligence and feelings. Like us they form families and societies. They play, they have sex, they reproduce, they experience pain and fear. They suffer and they even help strangers in need, just like we humans do.As William Arthur Ward wrote - If you can imagine it, you can achive it. If you can dream it, you can become it.So on the 25th of April 2020, I as a human with rights, universally proclaimed that also all animals have rights. They are therefore now also equal in worth and value to us humans.
